Restaurant Review - La Madera
"The sauces he creates use ingredients that merge together magically."
K.L. Moore
Our town just got lucky again. We are always getting new restaurants opening and closing their doors. Well, we have a new place, and hopefully, it will keeps its doors open for a long time. 'La Madera', the new beach restaurant on the beach La Madera is operated by the French chef, Mathias Habrioux. He is known for his ingenious sauces and pastries. He is a beach restaurant by day and, by night, he holds court at his ocean-side patio, preparing your dinner as only he can.
The reason for this write up is not to profile is newness, but to shed some light on a new taste here in Zihuatanejo, one that needs to stay. His appetizers are genuine unique creations and cannot be missed. His lobster crepes are divine and, for a very different taste, try his beet carpaccio, with thin slices of beets, mango, covered with a homemade vinaigrette and topped with crumbled blue cheese, as I said it sounds different, but you have to try it.
His entrées are usually a fish, chicken and beef dish, with a house special every night, but do not even think that sounds boring. The sauces he creates use ingredients that merge together magically. His Roquefort sauce for his skirt steak is the thing dreams are made of. Desserts are really his specialty. Mango tacos with a coconut cream sauce are a must. I must admit though, the most creative dish I tried was chilled slices of orange with a rosemary cream sauce. I would never have thought to put rosemary and oranges together, but it was delicious. The wine list is not extensive but it is in the works. But, the margaritas are good and the choices in tequila are right on the money.
The location is very romantic and a perfect place to have a nice dinner. You are sitting on the patio on the edge of the waves rushing in at La Madera Beach. Candles and flowers add an elegant touch. The restaurant is still new and working out a few glitches here and there, but all in all, it is a great dining experience. And, luckily, the prices are not so exorbitant. Mathias is open for breakfast too. A little bird told me that if you call and request a day in advance, he will make some real French croissants for you. For croissants and reservations give Mathias a call at 554-0860.
Buen Provecho.
