Hand-feeding technique consists of holding the newborn macaw or cockatoo and syringe feeding very two hours until they are about two weeks old. For another period of weeks the baby macaws and cockatoos require syringe feeding every three hours. At about three months they only require three syringe feedings a day and begin eating on their own. At four to six months they go through the difficult process of weaning. It is never advisable to buy a bird until it is fully weaned; because a poorly weaned bird can later develop nutritional and or behavioral problems. Knowing you have bought a bird from competent professionals who have mastered the developmental process is critical.

Fledged birds fly daily in well-equipped atrium for muscle development and socialization. Putting the bird into the flight develops their muscle strength. The bird learns to fly and socializes outside five hours daily; learning to bathe in a pool/waterfall, climb, play with toys, look for food and solve problems. This flight is attached to our living room so we can supervise continually.

Twin Willows never exposes our flock to strange birds. New breeding pairs go through quarantine in a special building for 45 days until all test results come in. Likewise we do not allow anyone into our CLOSED aviary. Our birds never go to shows.

Birds are fed a wide of variety of fruit, vegetables, and large nuts with small amount seed on occasion.

In Memory of Mac who left us at age ninty-two in Spring,1999. Mac, a scarlet Macaw, was bought in 1923, a mature wild-caught bird. His owner adored him and built him a handsome large cage. After many years this gentleman died. His widow, whom we assume who had always been jealous of their relationship, placed Mac in a tiny cage and shut him into a closet for fifteen years where he lived without light and on sunflower seed. He was beaten and abused by her until eventually she was reported to the authorities who indicted her. Unfortunately, she died before being brought to Justice. The A.S.P.C.A. sent Mac to a pet shop who contacted the Davis'. They immediately took Mac to Brian Speer, D.M.V. Mac had survived a broken skull, broken legs, and wing and severe malnutrition. His scarlet feathers were pale pink! Evaluation by Speer and UC Davis experts analyzed the bird to be about eighty-two years old. "Macker" subsequently lived happily with the Davis', lying on his stuffed animals, enjoying sunbaths on the lawn and evenings in Jim's arms, even with his eventual arthritis and glaucoma. He passed quite quickly after a stroke and renal failure, and was buried in state. He will never be forgotten.
